  • Poverty Eradication

At AFSEN Africa, we recognize that poverty is not just about lack of income — it is deeply connected to degraded land, climate shocks, and limited access to opportunities. Smallholder farmers, women, and youth are the most affected by these challenges, yet they also hold the greatest potential to drive change when empowered with the right tools, skills, and opportunities.

Effects of CAEP Challenges

• Smallholder farmers: Erratic rainfall, degraded soils, and shrinking land productivity reduce harvests, leaving farmers trapped in cycles of food insecurity and poverty. Many are forced to sell livestock or migrate in ASALs counties, undermining long-term resilience.
• Women: Often carry the heaviest burden, spending hours each day fetching water and collecting fuelwood. This reduces time for education, entrepreneurship, or community leadership, reinforcing gender inequality.
• Youth: Facing high unemployment and disillusionment as agriculture becomes less viable. Many migrate to cities or across borders, contributing to instability and loss of potential rural innovation and productivity.

Our Response

AFSEN Africa’s poverty reduction strategy is built on empowerment, skills, and green livelihoods, ensuring communities are not just surviving but creating sustainable wealth.

Green Jobs & Enterprises

  • Youth and women-led tree nurseries: Training groups to establish and manage tree seedling businesses that supply reforestation programs, farms, and households. This generates income while greening landscapes.
  • Linking restored landscapes to markets: Developing value chains for timber, fruits, medicinal plants, and eco-tourism, ensuring communities benefit economically from conservation and ecosystem restoration.
  • Eco-enterprises and circular economy: Supporting small businesses and farmers in composting, recycling, renewable energy, and sustainable crafts that create jobs while reducing environmental harm.

Skill Development

  • Vocational training: Building capacity in climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy installation, carbon monitoring, and sustainable land management to open new pathways for employment.
  • AI and digital literacy: Equipping youth with the skills to leverage digital platforms, Next Gen AI, and green-tech opportunities—connecting them to global markets and climate innovation hubs.
